Overview:

A drawing experience that allows you to post your drawings on walls in AR and see them alongside the drawings of other users. Created for a booth at Imagine RIT.

Introduction

Our senior capstone project required us to develop an activity that would bring a smile to people's faces. Our project was designed as a booth for a university festival, where visitors would have limited time to engage with it. Therefore, we prioritized efficiency and clarity in our design.

Our creation, ArtTag, is a drawing activity that enables users to display their drawings on walls in augmented reality (AR), where they can view and interact with other users' drawings. We showcased this activity at a booth during Imagine RIT.

Senior

Capstone

Project

ArtTag is a student-led, designed, and developed senior capstone project.

Our team was made up of five designers and three developers.

We met twice weekly to collaborate and had weekly stand-up meetings with our faculty advisor to keep on track.

The team stayed connected over Slack and Discord voice channels when working separately.

KEY FEATURES

Created in Magica Voxel, these rooms were created to visually represent each location to the attendees at Imagine RIT. We felt the depictions would help users better understand each markers physical location.

INFORMATIVE DESIGN

Each screen was sure to inform the user of the impact their decisions would have, allowing them to confirm interactions and receive confirmations of successful actions.

MAIN MENU

The final home screen for the experience. The user would be greeted with the ability to view all locations available for the experience. Our AR system was marker-based, so locations were predetermined and featured a poster in order for the AR to function.

DRAWING SCREEN

This state was created so that users could quickly make new drawings with a simple array of tools at their disposal. They could then transition into the AR posting and view.

AR

APPLICATION

Users would place their finished drawings on an image of the given location. Then our experience would place it alongside other users' drawings.

Drawing:

The fundamental aspect of our experience is to provide users with the opportunity to create drawings and display them in augmented reality, which results in a distinctive and unforgettable experience.

Navigation:

Our goal was to ensure that users could easily locate the designated areas for the activity, which would enable them to commence the experience without any difficulty.

Collaboration:

We aimed to promote a sense of community by enabling users to view the drawings of other participants, which not only fosters collaboration but also creates a joyful and uplifting atmosphere. unique.

User Flow

User Flow

We began by creating a flowchart of every possible interaction a user could have with the experience, helping us narrow down pain points and interactions as soon as possible.

USER

SUBMISSIONS

With over 900 submissions, we feel that ArtTag was successful in making people smile. We had anticipated far fewer users, so adjusting for the rapid increase certainly proved a valuable hurdle to overcome.

STYLE GUIDE

Created with a modern feel with a connection to a graffiti style. We wanted to make sure the experience never influenced the user's own artistic style.

Use Case

Imagine RIT

ArtTag launched at Imagine RIT, RIT's annual Creativity and Innovation science fair that showcases the innovative spirit of RIT students, faculty, and staff.

Imagine RIT attracts 250 exhibits and 1800 visitors

Conclusion

AR Graffiti Experience

ArtTag is a student-led, student-designed, and student-developed senior capstone project.

Our team was given 14 weeks to create a functional mobile app & installation experience with the prompt to "make something to make Imagine RIT attendees smile."

ArtTag is a virtual space where people can create and view digital graffiti art using augmented reality.

ArtTag's Future

ArtTag is designed to make people smile, but at its heart is the idea that art has the power to connect us all.

What gets me excited about ArtTag is the idea that by using AR, we have theopportunity to create a hidden world of art, color, and community expression in every city and on any surface.
